HUBUNGAN DUKUNGAN KELUARGA DENGAN KEMAMPUAN BERKOMUNIKASI PADA ANAK BERKEBUTUHAN KHUSUS (TUNAGRAHITA) DI SEKOLAH LUAR BIASA NEGERI 1 KOTA PALANGKA RAYA

Abstract

Children with Special Needs (CWSN), particularly those with intellectual disabilities (tunagrahita), experience communication difficulties due to intellectual limitations. These limitations lead to challenges in articulation, word recall, and forming appropriate sentences. In this context, family support is an essential factor in helping children improve their communication abilities, both verbal and non-verbal. This study aims to determine the relationship between family support and communication skills in children with intellectual disabilities (tunagrahita) at Sekolah Luar Biasa Negeri 1 Palangka Raya. This study employed a quantitative correlational method with a cross-sectional approach. The sampling technique used was total sampling, involving 32 respondents. Data were collected using questionnaires distributed to parents and through observation of the children. The data were then analyzed using the Spearman Rank correlation test. The results indicated a significant relationship between family support and communication skills in children with intellectual disabilities, with a p-value = 0.000 (? < 0.05) and a correlation coefficient of r = 0.802, which indicates a strong level of association. There is a significant relationship between family support and communication skills in children with intellectual disabilities. Optimal family support can contribute positively to the child's communication development and social interaction. Therefore, it is essential for families to be more active and consistent in providing attention, guidance, and both emotional and informational support to their children.
