Abstract

Nosocomial infections are a serious problem in healthcare that can be prevented through hygienic living behaviors, one of which is by washing hands according to the WHO 5 moments guidelines. However, many families of patients in inpatient wards do not understand the importance of this procedure, thus increasing the risk of spreading infection in the hospital environment. This study aims to determine the relationship between patient visitors' knowledge and the 5 moments of handwashing behavior in an effort to prevent nosocomial infections in the Dahlia inpatient ward of Dr. Doris Sylvanus Regional Hospital, Palangka Raya. The study used a quantitative correlational design with a cross-sectional approach. A sample of 36 respondents was selected using a purposive sampling technique. The instruments used were a questionnaire to measure knowledge and an observation sheet to assess handwashing behavior. Data analysis was performed using the Spearman Rank test. Based on the results of statistical tests, it shows that most respondents have a good level of knowledge regarding nosocomial infections and the 5 moments of handwashing behavior. The Spearman Rank test results show a significant relationship between knowledge and handwashing behavior of patient visitors (p < 0.05). There is a significant relationship between knowledge about nosocomial infections and the 5 moments of handwashing behavior of patient visitors. Improving education and supporting facilities in hospitals can strengthen visitors' hygienic behavior and reduce the rate of nosocomial infections.
